FREIGHT FACILITY COMPENDIUM

THIS COMPENDIUM OF THE CHICAGO FREIGHT INDUSTRY'S PROJECTED FACILITY INVESTMENT PROGRAMS, SUMMARIZES THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY TO INVENTORY THE FREIGHT NETWORK AND DETERMINE THE NATURE OF PLANNING IN THE REGION. FIVE MODES OF TRANSPORT ARE CONSIDERED. RAILROAD TRACKS SPREAD OUT FROM THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT. THE MODAL YARDS ARE LOCATED WITHIN THE CITY AND THE MORE EXTENSIVE CLASSIFICATION YARDS ARE IN THE SUBURBS. TRUCKING TERMINALS ARE CLUSTERED THROUGHOUT THE CITY BUT CONCENTRATIONS OCCUR IN THE SOUTHWEST, COOK COUNTY AND ALONG THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY. AIR CARGO MOVEMENTS ARE DISCUSSED AS WELL AS WATERBORNE COMMERCE WHICH IS CONCENTRATED CHIEFLY IN THE SOUTHEAST. PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS PIPELINES ARE LOCATED IN THE SOUTH AND SOUTHWEST OF THE CITY. A FORECAST OF DEVELOPMENT OF FACILITIES THROUGH '75 IS PRESENTED. THE RAIL INDUSTRY PLANS IMPROVEMENT OF CLASSIFICATON AND INTERMODAL YARDS WITH GREATER EXPENDITURE ON THE LATTER. THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY PLANS NEW TERMINALS; INCREASED AIR CARGO WILL BE ACCOMMODATED THROUGH THE ENLARGEMENT OF FACILITIES AT O'HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. IMPROVEMENTS TO LOCAL AREA NAVIGABLE CHANNELS AND CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW HARBOR ARE PROJECTED. THE REPORT POINTS OUT THE UNDESIRABILITY OF PRIVATE PLANNING WHICH PERPETUATES EXISTING PATTERNS AND URGES COMPREHENSIVE, COOPERATIVE, INNOVATION PROMOTING, MULTIMODAL PLANNING WHICH WILL PROVIDE GUIDELINES FOR EFFICIENCY IMPROVING INVESTMENTS. THE REPORT INCLUDES GRAPHICAL PROJECTIONS AND A BIBLIOGRAPHY.
