AIR CARGO IN THE NJ/NY METROPOLITAN REGION

TRENDS IN CARGO SHIPMENT ARE DISCUSSED, BASED ON FORECASTS OF AIR TRAFFIC GROWTH AND AIR CARGO VOLUME AT NEW YORK AIRPORTS TO 1980. THREE METHODS OF ACCOMMODATING GROWTH ARE PRESENTED: OFF-AIRPORT EXPEDITING CENTERS, ALL-CARGO AIRPORTS, AND EXPANSION OF EXISTING FACILITIES. NO TRENDS TOWARD INTERMODAL CONTAINERS OR ALL-CARGO FACILITIES WERE SEEN. OFF- AIRPORT TERMINALS ARE EXPECTED TO GROW WITH CONTAINERIZATION. THE STUDY RECOMMENDS EXPANSION OF EXISTING FACILITIES AT KENNEDY, NEWARK, AND LAGUARDIA AS FEASIBLE ALONG WITH COORDINATED EFFORTS OF THE CONCERNED AGENCIES TO ESTABLISH A DATA BASE AND TO ASSURE CONSTRUCTIVE REGULATORY PROCEDURES.
