AIR CARGO TRANSPORTATION-THE INTRAURBAN SUBSYSTEMS

THE TOTAL DOOR-TO-DOOR SYSTEM FOR THE AIR TRANSPORT OF CARGO MAY BE DIVIDED INTO THREE SUBSYSTEMS: INTRA- URBAN AT ORIGIN, INTER-CITY, AND INTRA-URBAN AT DESTINATION. THIS STUDY PROVIDES A COMPREHENSIVE VIEW OF THE INTRA-URBAN SUBSYSTEMS AND THEIR COMPONENTS. QUANTITATIVE INFORMATION ON SHIPMENT CHARACTERISTICS, FLOW RATES, SURFACE TRAFFIC, AND FUNCTIONAL UNIT COSTS ARE SUMMARIZED. THE DETAILED FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS AND GENERALIZED QUANTITATIVE DATA PRESENTED ARE SUITABLE FOR PRELIMINARY PLANNING OF INDIVIDUAL AIRPORT AND ACCESS SUBSYSTEMS. THE NEED FOR MORE DETAILED AND LOCALIZED DATA IS STRESSED AND, WHERE POSSIBLE, LIKELY SOURCES OF INFORMATION ARE IDENTIFIED. NUMEROUS VOIDS IN THE AVAILABLE QUANTITATIVE DATA ARE IDENTIFIED. SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR STUDIES OF INTERCITY FREIGHT CHARACTERISTICS, FUNCTIONAL COSTS, AND THE POTENTIALITY OF NEW AND EXISTING MODES OF INTRA-URBAN TRANSPORT FOR AIR CARGO. /AUTHOR/
