Intelligent Transport Systems: Linking Technology and Transport Policy to Help Steer the Future

This article describes Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), such as electronic message signs, electronic tags for paying tolls and parking charges, and real-time traffic and transit information, and how they are transforming and improving various forms of travel. But the authors also suggest there are a number of implementation challenges that are slowing up the development and implementation of new ITS solutions. These include the jargon that technology developers often use, which is incomprehensible by elected officials or agency decision-makers. Other challenges include finding the appropriate role for the private sector, developing workable business plans, and making sure sponsors understand that not all research results may be deployable in the short term. The authors suggest that greater attention be given to these problems in order to advance ITS in the marketplace.
