GOODS MOVEMENT BY TRUCK IN THE CENTRAL AREA OF SELECTED CANADIAN CITIES

THIS WAS DEVELOPED AS AN INITIAL REPORT IN A SERIES OF URBAN GOODS MOVEMENT STUDIES. THE INITIAL PURPOSE WAS: TO DEVELOP SURVEY METHODS BY WHICH ALL TYPES OF THE URBAN GOODS MOVEMENT SYSTEM COULD BE STUDIED; TO INVESTIGATE THE SYSTEM IN THE CENTRAL AREA OF TORONTO; TO IDENTIFY BASIC PROBLEMS RELATED TO TORONTO'S CENTRAL AREA; AND TO SUGGEST PRACTICAL WAYS TO IMPROVE TORONTO'S GOODS MOVEMENT SYSTEM AND TO INDICATE FURTHER RESEARCH AREAS. REGRESSION ANALYSIS WAS USED TO RELATE THE NUMBER OF TRUCK STOPS TO FLOOR AREA OR DOLLAR SALES. IT IS RECOMMENDED: THAT TIMING OF PICK-UPS AND DELIVERIES BE ALTERED IN THE CORE; THAT CHANGES BE MADE IN THE ZONING LAWS AND BUILDING CODES TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE GENERATION CAPABILITIES OF DIFFERENT LAND USES; THAT STUDIES BE MADE TO DETERMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF ALTERING RATES CHARGED BY FOR-HIRE CARRIERS TO REFLECT DIFFERENCES IN LOADING FACILITIES AND SHIPPER'S ASSISTANCE; THAT EFFORTS BE EXPENDED TO ACHIEVE CONSOLIDATION OF SHIPMENTS' SIZE WITH ACCOMPANYING SOPHISTICATION OF LOADING FACILITIES AND PICK-UP AND DELIVERY OPERATIONS.
