ESTIMATING METROPOLITAN CHICAGO'S FREIGHT TRAFFIC

THIS DESCRIBES THE CHICAGO METROPOLITAN REGION AND LISTS THE VARIETY OF SECONDARY INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON URBAN FREIGHT MOVEMENTS. BY AGGREGATING ALL OF THE SECONDARY SOURCES, CATS ESTIMATED THAT 588 MILLION TONS OF GOODS MOVE INTO, OUT OF, AND THROUGH THE REGION. NO COMMODITY ANALYSIS WAS POSSIBLE USING THE AVAILABLE DATA. THE MAJOR CONCLUSIONS WERE THAT: (1) CATS WOULD HAVE TO COLLECT PRIMARY DATA IN ORDER TO HAVE A RELIABLE URBAN GOODS DATA FILE, AND (2) CHICAGO'S GOOD MOVEMENT STUDIES WOULD HAVE TO EMBRACE RAIL, HIGHWAY, WATER, PIPE, AND AIR MODES.
