FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION AND FUTURE HIGHWAY REQUIREMENTS

STATISTICAL INFORMATION ON RECENT TRENDS IN MOTOR FREIGHT AND THE OTHER FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION MODES ARE EXAMINED, AND PRODUCTIVITY IN TRUCKING ANALYZED ALONG WITH POSSIBLE FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO PRODUCTIVITY CHANGES. RECENT AND FUTURE TECHNOLOGICAL, BUSINESS, GOVERNMENT, AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENTS HAVING POTENTIAL EFFECTS ON HIGHWAY PLANNING ARE IDENTIFIED AND EVALUATED. IMPLICATIONS FOR HIGHWAY PLANNING ARE DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF LOCATION OF HIGHWAY DEMAND, HIGHWAY DESIGN, HIGHWAY USE, AND TOTAL FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION DEMAND AND MODAL SHARES. /AUTHOR/
