PRINCIPLES WHICH SHOULD GOVERN THE LOCATION AND PRIORITIES OF THE ROADS IN MOTORWAY NETWORKS

RECOMMENDATIONS ISSUED BY THE MINISTERS' CONFERENCE ON REGIONAL PLANNING FOR THE SELECTION OF REGIONAL PLANNING PRINCIPLES WHICH GOVERN THE PLANNING OF LONG- DISTANCE ROADS ARE SUMMARIZED. THE RELATION BETWEEN TRAFFIC VOLUMES, LAND USE AND ROAD CAPACITY IS ANALYZED. EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN FOR THE USE OF NEW MOTORWAY SECTIONS IN RELIEVING EXISTING ROADS AND MOTORWAYS. A DISTINCTION IS MADE BETWEEN DIFFERENT TYPES OF MOTORWAYS ACCORDING TO THE DEMANDS THAT THEY MUST FULFILL; THE PROPOSED CLASSIFICATION TAKES ACCOUNT OF THE TRAFFIC VOLUME TO BE CARRIED AND THE AVERAGE TRIP DISTANCE. /TRRL/
