PRINCIPLES WHICH SHOULD GOVERN THE LOCATION AND PRIORITIES OF THE ROADS IN MOTORWAY NETWORKS

THE ROLE OF MOTORWAYS IS DEFINED ACCORDING TO THE SPECIAL ROADS ACT, 1949, AND THE UTILIZATION OF TRAFFIC FORECASTS FOR ASSESSING FUTURE NEEDS IS DISCUSSED. EACH SECTION OF EXISTING TRUNK ROADS IS EVALUATED IN TERMS OF ITS SPEED/FLOW RELATION IN ORDER TO DECIDE ON INVESTMENT PRIORITIES FOR ROAD IMPROVEMENT. MENTION IS MADE OF THE COMPUTER BASED TRAFFIC MODELS USED IN THE COMPREHENSIVE ROUTE STRATEGY STUDY FOR EVALUATING THE WHOLE OF THE TRUNK AND PRINCIPAL ROAD NETWORKS TOGETHER WITH THE COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS CONDUCTED FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL SCHEME. /TRRL/
