TRANSPORT MODES AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR DEVELOPMENT

THIS STUDY EXPLORES THE PROBLEM OF THE CORRECT COMBINATION OF THE FACTORS OF PRODUCTION AS APPLIED TO TRANSPORT AND SHOWS THAT DECISIONS ON CHOICE SHOULD BE BASED NOT ON LABOUR OR CAPITAL INTENSITY AS SUCH, BUT ON THE CRITERIA OF ECONOMIC OR COST EFFECTIVENESS. IT IS MAINLY CONCERNED WITH THE COMPARATIVE COST AND PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DIFFERENT MODES OR TECHNOLOGIES OF TRANSPORT, WITH THE EMPHASIS PLACED ON NEW DEVELOPMENTS. THE REPORT IS PRESENTED UNDER THE FOLLOWING HEADINGS: (1) LABOUR AND CAPITAL INTENSITY; (2) COST EFFECTIVENESS; (3) RAILWAYS IN THE MOTOR AGE; (4) RAIL AND ROAD TRAFFIC; (5) ROADS AND MOTOR VEHICLES; (6) AIR CARGO; (7) PIPELINES; (8) WATER TRANSPORT; (9) PEOPLE ON THE MOVE. /TRRL/
