IDENTIFYING AND EVALUATING TRADE-OFF PREFERENCES. AN ANALYSIS OF ENVIRONMENTAL/ACCESSIBILITY PRIORITIES

A DEVELOPMENT PROJECT EXAMINES PREFERENCES FOR, AND BETWEEN, A RANGE OF VARIABLES RELATED BOTH TO ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY AND JOURNEY ACCESSIBILITY. A SIMULATION DEVICE, THE "PRIORITY EVALUATOR" IS USED TO MEASURE TRADE-OFF PREFERENCES. THE DEVICE CONSISTS BASICALLY OF A BOARD ON WHICH AN OVERLAY CONSISTING OF FIVE ROWS OF THREE PICTURES CAN BE PRESENTED TO RESPONDENTS. EACH OF THE ROWS REPRESENTS A DIFFERENT FACTOR, E.G., NOISE FROM TRAFFIC, PEDESTRIAN SAFETY, ON WHICH THE RESPONDENT'S VALUATION IS REQUIRED. THE SAMPLE WAS LIMITED TO RESIDENTS IN THE LONDON BOROUGH OF BRENT WHO WERE OWNER OCCUPIERS, CAR OWNERS AND UNDER 55 YEARS OF AGE. RELATIONS BETWEEN PREFERENCES AND EXISTING SITUATIONS ARE DISCUSSED. /TRRL/
