THE JOINT PROGRAM IN TRANSPORTATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO AND YORK UNIVERSITY WAS FORMED EARLY IN 1970 FOR THE PURPOSE OF CO-ORDINATING AND PROMOTING INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AND TEACHING IN TRANSPORTATION AT THE TWO UNIVERSITIES. WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF A MAJOR FOUR-YEAR GRANT FROM THE CANADIAN TRANSP. COMM., THE PROGRAM BECAME OPERATIONAL AND SINCE THEN HAS SET OUT TO ACHIEVE THREE BASIC GOALS: (1) TO PROMOTE AND COORDINATE THE RESEARCH INTERESTS AND EXPERTISE OF UNIVERSITY STAFF AND STUDENTS IN THE FIELD OF TRANSPORTATION. (2) TO PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COMPREHENSIVE TEACHING PROGRAM IN TRANSPORTATION UTILIZING THE MOST ADVANCED INSTRUCTIONAL CONCEPTS AVAILABLE. (3) TO ESTABLISH AN ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE WHICH WILL PERMIT THE DEVELOPMENT OF A JOINT TRANSPORT PROGRAM OF TEACHING AND RESEARCH EXCELLENCE AT THE TWO UNIVERSITIES. THE JOINT PROGRAM IS NOW MIDWAY THROUGH THE THIRD YEAR OF ITS EXISTENCE AND IT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS REPORT TO REVIEW THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE FIRST TWO YEARS AND TO OUTLINE THE REQUIRED POLICY DIRECTIONS AND ASSOCIATED PRIORITIES FOR THE FUTURE. /RTAC/
