SOME EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS OF THE FLOW THROUGH GAUZE SCREENS

The flow through gauze screen discs mounted in a wind tunnel was studied visually and their drag coefficients were measured. The expansion of the streamtub intercepted by the screens was found to be adequately well predicted by one-dimensional actuator-disc theory. However, the measured variation of screen drag coefficient with resistance coefficient k agreed closely with theoretical predictions only when k4. The separation bubble downstream of screen elements reported by other investigators was observed visually. It existed only when k was equal to or 4, and the variation of its form and location with k was recorded.
