On a Crash Course: The Dangers and Health Costs of Deficient Roadways
This study examines the role that road condition plays in causing and contributing to traffic accidents on the nation's highways. It's main finding is that the severity and cost of highway traffic accidents that have road condition as a causative factor are much greater than traffic accidents that are caused by speeding, not wearing seat belts, or drunk driving. Traffic accidents that have road condition as a contributing factor cost over $217 billion dollars every year. Condition of roads contributes to over half - 52.7% - of the almost 42,000 deaths in America that result from traffic accidents every year.
