Sustainability 3.0. Building Tomorrow's Earth-Friendly Communities
Although the core values of sustainability have been in practice for centuries, there has been an increased commitment to sustainability in planning over the past decade. This article highlights some examples of how sustainability is being incorporated into planning and design projects throughout the world, and discusses some models for urban sustainability. There have been numerous sustainable development projects in the United States, including innovative green elements incorporated into a residential high rise in Manhattan and an affordable housing community in California fully powered with solar energy. Europe has led the way in sustainability, with Sweden sending out an information packet about sustainability from their king to every family in the country and Copenhagen setting a goal of having half of all journey-to-work trips be by bicycle by the year 2015. Despite the progress, the challenge remains of increasing public awareness and acceptability of sustainability.
