Factors influencing asphalt compaction
The paper cover factors affecting compatibility of hot-mix asphalt including gradation, filler/binder ratios, binder types, binder content, polymer modification, temperature, volumetric properties, etc. Laboratory analysis of the mixes as well as accelerated pavement testing using the one-third scale model mobile load simulator (MMLS) was carried out. The analysis assists in the identification of factors that influence both compatibility and rut resistance, those influencing the one but not the other, and those factors having no significance influence. Only the compatibility aspects are reported here. It was found that the gradation of a mix has a significant influence on compaction. It was confirmed that the filler has a stiffening effect on the binder mastic. High filler/binder ratios were found to be critical factors influencing the compatibility. As expected, the binder type has a significant influence on the compatibility, and an increase in binder content facilitated compaction. With the limited testing, the influence of compaction temperature on compatibility at the test temperatures was inconclusive.
