Building the Road

The authors note that road design in Africa is an all-inclusive process. They note that social awareness, good design practices, and foundational R&D are all needed. Once these elements come together, they then must be used in conjunction with local needs, environmental characteristics, and materials. Several countries are discussed, including Ghana, which revised its "Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Works" in April 2007; Madagascar, which is currently rehabilitating roads in the Sofia region under a Euro 100 million project that is designed to minimize environmental and social impact; and South Africa, which is using the benefits of R&D in developing a new method for pavement design that uses both conventional and non-conventional materials.
