The report attempts to describe and offer solutions to the problems caused when a new road construction causes severance of farm units. A method is proposed whereby the allocation of farm bridges or underpasses can be made on a rational basis. The method involves measuring the following elements once a new road is constructed: extra distance travelled by men and equipment; the extent of severed land; number of trips per annum to the severed land; the speed and cost of travel. Two case studies are discussed which show how the techniques can be used in the early stages of road planning to identify areas susceptible to severance problems. /TRRL/
