LANDSLIDE EVALUATION BY MEANS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD STRENGTH MEASUREMENT

Several landslides of various dimensions occur each year in Sweden. Several of the landslides have caused considerable damage, such as the Tuve landslide in 1977. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and to further develop the emf-method for synoptic investigation of possible landslide areas. The method involves an investitgation of changes of the electromagnetic waves after passage through the strata. The investigations were carried out according to the following; selection of suitable investigation areas, field strength measurements, and geological-geotechnical investigations. Two types of field strength anomalies were obatined from the emf measurements; amplitude variations (local anomalies), and absolute value variations between different parts of the investigation area (regional variations). Considering that anomalies in field strength can occur for various reasons, and not mainly as a consequence of differences in dielectric constants, the emf-method is judged to be too unreliable for investigation of possible landslide areas. /TRRL/
