FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF SOME GEOTECHNICAL AND GEOHYDROLOGICAL PROBLEMS

NAAGRA GEOTEKNISKA OCH GEOHYDRO - LOGISKA PROBLEM ANALYSERADE MED FINIT ELEMENTMETOD

The finite element method has proved to be an efficient tool in analyzing common civil engineering problems. The application on some selected problems in geotechnology is demonstrated. The qualitative behaviour of the solutions are discussed. Aspects on future developments concerning both practical engineering use and research are given. The following selected problems are analyzed: (1) bearing capacity of a sand layer, (2) bearing capacity of a clay layer. Consolidation settlements, (3) short term stability of a slope in clay, (4) comparison of the efficiency of a rectangular and a circular drain, (5) seepage beneath a dam, (6) transient flow in a confined aquifer, (7) soil-structure interaction and (8) settlements in clay caused by drainage in a trench. /TRRL/
