POLICY EVALUATION OF CRASH BARRIERS

This report was prepared for the Australian National Capital Development Commission. The primary emphasis of the report is on the selection between standard steel w-beam and concrete barriers for use in medians of higher-volume roads, but road-side barriers, bridge railings, end treatments and transition treatments are also discussed. In the recent past there has been a reluctance to use concrete median barriers, but current research has shown that there are limited conditions under which a carefully designed concrete median barrier should be recommended. The project has also illustrated that careful design and placement of the selected barriers is essential in achieving their optimum performance. /TRRL/
