Modeling Inertia Effect on Stated-Choice Behavior: Case of Long-Distance Coach Travel Choice

The current study proposes an alternative approach to measure the inertia effect in the stated choice model using Taiwan's long-distance coach travel choice as a case study. The proposed approach first uses the logistic regression model to predict each traveler's inertia probability for each coach firm, then modeling the inertia probability variables associated with each coach using mixed multinomial logit model. The model analysis suggests that the inertia probability variables are estimated as being statistically significant. In compare with the inertia dummy variables, mostly being used in past studies, the effects of the inertia probability variables are not confounded with the effects of service quality. This means that the relative importance of service quality in the model would not be ignored. The proposed approach could help to further understand the influenced factors for coach travelers¡¦ habitual choice behavior and provides some practical implications for coach business firms.
