DESIGN OF THE STRENGTHENING OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS

DIMENSIONNEMENT DES RENFORCEMENTS DE CHAUSSEES SOUPLES

This technical guide applies only to flexible pavements, e.g. non-stabilized granular structures covered with surface dressings or bituminous mixtures. It reviews the present knowledge in this field and aims at disseminating information on the design methods of strengthening flexible pavements developed in France, at standardizing the application of this method in the different regions of France while taking into account the conditions specific to each road, and at benefiting as much as possible from the experience gained on main roads and applying it to local roads. Because of the complex character of the analysis of an existing pavement and of the specificity of each case, it was thought that this document should be presented in the form of guidelines for taking the decisions necessary for strengthening existing flexible pavements. The guidelines define thicknesses of strengthening (roadbases and wearing courses) for two types of different material: (1) gravel stabilized with hydraulic binders; (2) gravel stabilized with bituminous binders; and asphaltic concrete. Four parameters are taken into account: (a) traffic carried; (2) frost index of reference winter; (3) structural category of the existing pavement; (4) index of frost behaviour of the existing pavement. /TRRL/
