SHIPBOARD EVALUATION OF 'AQUA-SEP' (AQUA-CHEM, INC.) AS AN OIL/WATER SEPARATOR ABOARD THE TANKER S.S. GULF KING

Oily ballast water was used to evaluate an AQUA-SEP oil/water separator aboard the tanker S.S. GULF KING. While the oil content in the effluent water was below 80 parts per million (average oil removal 95.6%), the capacity of the separator was low. Steam flushing of the prefilter was required to lower the pressure drop across the fine mesh fiber glass element. The life of the coalescer elements was short, as indicated by the sharp increase in the pressure drop across the AQUA-SEP stages.
