AIRPORT ENGINEERING

This book is a basic text for airport planning and design courses in civil engineering. It should also be valuable as a professional reference for architectural, engineering, and planning consultants who deal with airport planning and design. The book begins with a concise description of the various international, national, and local organizations and agencies that affect air transportation, as well as the means by which airports are financed. It includes helpful background material on aircraft characteristics and the air traffic control systems that facilitate safe aerial navigation. Principles of airport master planning and system planning are presented and chapters are devoted to airport capacity and configuration and the planning and layout of passenger terminals. Fundamental principles of airport layout and design are covered, including geometric design, airport drainage, and pavement design. We have attempted to emphasize areas of emerging concern and significance. Thus chapters are included on forecasting air transport demand, air cargo facilities, airport access, requirements of V/STOL systems, and the environmental impact of airports. /Author/
