HIGH TENSILE STEEL IN SHIPBUILDING, 7. FATIGUE, FRACTURE TOUGHNESS TRANSVERSE THE ROLLING DIRECTION AND THERMAL TREATMENT

By tig treatment of the welds, the increase in the fatigue load of the welded constructions is nearly doubled. The stress levels may be increased 1.2 times without a reduction in the fatigue life compared to untreated structures. The toughness transverse the rolling direction of steels can be increased by rare earth metal treatment to obtain the same values across the rolling directions as in the rolling direction before the treatment.
