Broad Gauge Heads to Austria

In November 2008, a multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on 1,524 mm-gauge network extension to western Europe was signed by representatives of the Slovakian government, Russian Railways (RZD), and Ukrainian Railways (UZ) in Slovakia. The volume of rail freight moving between Asia and Europe could be boosted with the help of this new line, which extends from Kosice, Slovakia to the Austrian border. Russian and Slovakian transportation ministries also signed a political agreement confirming the Slovakian government's desire to cooperatively and quickly work with Russia to develop the International Corridor V route via Kosice. Transcontainer, the intermodal operator that is majority owned by RZD, signed a 15-year lease for the Dobra container transshipment terminal with ZSSK Cargo. Transcontainer sees the Dobra terminal as the western end of the Asia to Europe 12,000 km landbridge, and a complement to its terminal at Zabaikalsk on the Chinese/Russian border.
