A NEW GENERATION OF DYNAMIC POSITIONING SYSTEMS FOR VESSELS

A computerized dynamic positioning system for vessels has been developed and successfully installed on different kinds of offshore vessels. The system is based upon Kalman filtering techniques and modern control theory in order to give a smooth and precise control of the vessel. A variety of position measurement systems may be used together with a system-integrated measurement error checking system. The basic control system design is presented in the paper. The paper will also give a brief description of how anchors may be used together with the ordinary system. Field data of the system performance are presented for some of the installations.
