THE ADDITION OF FIBROUS MATERIALS AND THEIR EFFECT UPON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

It is known that the addition of asbestos improves the qualities of joint sealing material, waterproofing material and mastic asphalt. A report is made on the work of the ak "Use of asbestos in bitumious highway construction by the Highway Research Institute" and upon the trial stretches in Hamburg (rolled asphalt) and Berlin (gussasphalt) as well as the research work by A. Scheurer and K. Hoeher of Karlsruhe University. By the addition of asbestos the demand of the mixture for binder is raised. With an unaltered binder content the mix is too lean and no longer workable or compactable. A particular area of application for asbestos has been opened up by the central laboratory of Strabag Bau-AG in the form of materials known by their trade names mastimac and mastiphalt. The high stone content (over 70% by weight) with a tenacious mortar and high binder proportion is stabilised with asbestos. By this means a high resistance to abrasion and constructional stability is achieved. Because asbestos as a naturally occurring raw material is available only in restricted quantities and its cost is therefore equivalently high, various alternatives (organic and synthetic fibrous materials) have been investigated for their use in bituminous road construction. Sustained by positive laboratory results using fibrous material/binder systems and also with mixes, mixtures have been produced for experimental roads whose reinforcement still endures. The assumption may be justified that certain types of fibres are just as problem-free as asbestos. /TRRL/
