In order to withstand, without damage, the loading of a pavement by traffic (weight, number and speed), the tyres of vehicles and the weather conditions (heat and cold), the bituminous mix must fulfil specific requirements: stability, resistance to ageing and skid resistance. The specifications TV bit and tvt regulate the composition, construction and testing of bituminous layers. These technical regulations have proved themselves, but it is necessary to take notice of changes in the loading pattern. This awareness must be achieved by the highway research organisations and the results checked in practice. In considering the loading it is necessary to produce the rank order of the various qualities which bituminous mixes must have in order that they produce, circumstances permitting, exclusive influence values on each other. The author explains the various aspects of the deformation and abrasion behaviour and deals particularly with the heat damage of the summer of 1976 and the changes arising from this to the specification TV bit 3/72, since the excessive damage from tyre studs has been removed as a result of their prohibition. A test method by which the deformation condition can be directly established is still lacking. There is only the test for penetration and the measurement of stability using the Marshall test. Neither of these provide a sure method for the evaluation of resistance to deformation. In the Central Laboratory of the Strabag Bau-AG an investigation procedure using a dynamic penetration apparatus has been developed which verifies practical experience. The same laboratory has also produced an apparatus for the abrasion condition in which samples are loaded to simulate reality and from which an estimation of the abrasion resistant qualities of various surfaces may be undertaken.
