PROBLEMS OF SKIDDING RESISTANCE AND OF COLOUR WITH BITUMINOUS SURFACES

PROBLEME DER GRIFFIGEIT UND DER HELIGKEIT BITUMINOESER FAHRBAHNDECKEN

The colour and skidding resistance of carriageway surfaces have considerable significance for traffic safety. Consideration is given to the fundamental principles of skidding resistance and to the usual survey procedures using the portable pendulum tester, sideway force apparatus and braking force trailer and also to the surfaces which have been investigated in the central laboratories of Strabag Bau-AG. The behaviour of these surfaces and also the comparison between asphalt surfaces with and without chippings is described. A preliminary guide to the lightening of bituminous carriageway surfaces is being prepared by the Highway Research Institute. In addition to the optical objective of causing better perception on the part of the road user, lighter road surfaces also play a role in reflecting heat during long hot periods and in urban areas make an economic contribution towards street lighting. For the measurement of the reflective behaviour of road surfaces a method has been developed in the central laboratory of strabag bau-ag based upon an evaluation of the mineral additive and its lightening qualities. Not only mineral mixes may be examined but also polished bituminous mixes. /TRRL/
