SPECIAL CONCRETE

The Central Laboratory of Strabag Bau-AG has controbuted on several occasions towards the development of various special concretes. These are cement concretes to which special additives or admixtures have been added or with peculiarities in the manufacturing process or for special applications. A few of the wide ranging developments are described in the following examples. (1) eps concrete (expanded polystyrene concrete) known by its trade names styropor- or hostapor-concrete with qualities of increased thermal insulation and light weight. Its range of applications include industrial buildings, railways and highway construction. Typical eps concrete structures are named for each of the different uses (tank construction, track foundations, road bases) and these can be referred to in practice. (2) lightweight concrete for higher constructional stability requirements; preparation methods for lightweight additives have been developed and in the aptitude tests reference has been made not only to the normal density of the hardened lightweight concrete. (3) heavyweight concrete with a density of over 2.6 kg/m3 for use in nuclear reactors against radiation and as ballast concrete; the central laboratory is involved in the preparation of specifications for the manufacture of these. (4) plastic concrete, which deviates in certain respects from standards which have been laid down and which has been improved by Strabag Bau-AG (Experience with the burglangenfeld demonstration project). Furthermore, descriptions are provided of pre-heated concrete, particularly in projects at Berlin and Hamburg, hardened concrete, with which Strabag Bau-AG has been systematically involved for over 30 years and the lift-slab method of construction. /TRRL/
