The nature of skid resistance is both predictable and measurable in terms of fundamental quantities, viz:-coefficient of friction and time. This characteristic behaviour is shown to be independent of the mechanism of polishing. The relationship between these fundamental parameters provides a characteristic equation suitable for all modes of surface treatment. The characteristic equation can further be used to predict the "skid resistance" life of surface treatment under varying traffic volumes, conditions or road geometry and climatic conditions. It is shown as feasible to use crushed brick materials as skid resistant aggregates. /TRRL/
