Application and Expectation of Remote Sensing Based Road Extraction Technologies Used in GIS-T

This paper introduces methods on establishing and updating GIS-T road network geo-database, and summarizes the current development status and trends of Remote Sensing (RS) technologies. Furthermore, this paper systematically reviews the technologies on RS-based road extraction, classifies the critical techniques for road extraction from RS imagery, and states the studies of different kinds of methods respectively. The classification is basically according to the details of techniques, and this paper also brings forward a classification based on different resolutions on present technology level. Finally, the important status and potential development of RS and GIS-T in transportation information services are analyzed, and also the developing direction of studies in interrelated fields.
