The quality of a road is described in terms of its physical attributes, e.g. the thickness of its pavement, the CBR of its subgrade, the distribution of the particle sizes in its base course etc. The values of all such attributes vary between limits of small or large range. For the purposes of establishing the quality of an existing road at appropriate levels of confidence, the number of samples are determined by the use of the equations presented.
