The aim of this paper is to provide an insight into the potential advantages of digital control utilising microprocessors, in the area of propulsion machinery control and monitoring systems and associated equipment. New concepts in propulsion controls and ship performance are discussed with particular reference to the D77 System. The fundamental concept employed in the design of this system is functional modularity, which is based on the principal of partitioning the hardware and the software into modules, each of which carries out an easily identifiable function.
