The oil crisis which hit the western world in the winter of 1973-74 served to highlight a problem which, until then, had by and large remained hidden from public awareness: the uncertainty with regard to the future supply of energy and, in particular, oil. Since that date there has been much speculation as to the availability and price of energy in both the medium and long term. Although, forecasting in this context is a hazardous pursuit, many authorities have predicted that world oil production will peak during the 1980's and thereafter fail to keep pace with the demands expected to result if economic expansion is to continue apace. /Author/TRRL/
