DETECTION OF UNDERGROUND CAVITIES

DETECTION DES CAVITES SOUTERRAINES

This section of the bulletin contains reports presented to the "comite francais de geologie de l'ingenieur" (French committee of engineering geology). They review new methods of greater efficiency as regards operation or interpretation. In gravimetric investigations, the improvement concerns only the interpretation of the results either by using mathematical models to represent the distribution of bulk density in the soil, or by taking account of the bulk density values of the shallow soil; in electrical investigations, the improvement consists either in refining the solution by directing the current at the level of the cavities or making more accurate measurements using existing transmitters; in the field of seismic investigations, instead of measuring wave propagation time, which cannot be representative, a study is made of the shape of the wave; as regards borehole investigations, the use of an electromagnetic method enables a wider range to be investigated. /TRRL/
