CONTRIBUTION TO THE DETECTION OF SHALLOW CAVITIES BY MEANS OF SEISMIC REFLECTION

CONTRIBUTION A LA DETECTION PAR SISMIQUE REFLEXION DES CAVITES DE FAIBLE PROFONDEUR

Generally speaking conventional methods of seismic investigation are not satisfactory. A method has been developed which tries to clearly show the waves reflected on the roof of the cavity, their existence having been demonstrated in tests on a two-dimensional model. To try to detect a cavity in-situ, a lag method is used; the latter utilizes two geophones positioned at 1 and 3 metres from the source. The signals received are recorded on magnetic tape for easier processing of the results. Data interpretation is based on several criteria: existence of high-amplitude signals, phasing of signals on both tracks, determination of the coefficient of correlation of the two tracks. /TRRL/
