ROAD MAINTENANCE

Eight short articles are included under this title. The ways in which money available for maintenance of roads and highway structures in England and Wales may be most effectively used are reviewed. (1) Charting the course of road conditions, Heywood, P. A description is given of the computerised highway assessment of ratings and treatments system (chart) and reference is made to the use of the deflectograph, profileometer and skid resistance measurement equipment (SCRIM). (2) New Pavements for old, Bunnell, D. Two techniques of revitalising and relaying old road material are examined, the first by scarifying, breaking and relaying existing material with new asphalt binder, and the second by removal of old material for re-batching and laying. (3) Plant picked to pave the way, Bunnell, D. This is a description of plant available for repair and maintenance work, covering breakers, grooving machines, planers and finishing machines. (4) Keeping bridge faults in check, Heywood, P. A short description is given of Kent CC's method for regular inspection of highway structures. (5) Getting the bearings right. Contract journal reviews the need for correct design of bearings and describes the high standard of workmanship required in their installation and replacement. (6) Birmingham bridges put joints to the test, Atkinson, I. This article gives details of the joint tests carried out by West Midlands cc and their joint replacement programme for the M5 and M6 viaducts. (7) Key to the right resin. This is a summary of a review of the uses of resins in bridges and concrete road repair. (8) Coming to grips with repair materials, Heywood, P. This article describes developments in materials for road maintenance and repair, using resin and bituminous binders. /TRRL/
