Samples from the spans of the M50 motorway bridge which fell when struck by a lorry are being analysed at TRRL to investigate the reliability of grouting as protection for prestressing tendons. Concern has been expressed on the effectiveness of tendon grouting with age. If voids occur in the grouting it is possible for air to enter the duct which would react with the alkalies in the cement reducing its ph. TRRL are also working on methods of repairing prestressed bridges and improved methods of monitoring deterioration. It is also felt that mobile cutting equipment should be available so that complete longitudinal sections could be removed for detailed analysis. Fears that the demolition of the prestressed structure would present problems were unfounded, but it was suggested that a register should be kept of structures whose demolition would pose problems. It was felt that the demolition of structures with unbonded tendons could be dangerous and that that there should be more supervision of the demolition of modern structures. /TRRL/
