A MECHANISM SOLUTION FOR PREDICTING THE COLLAPSE LOADS OF SLENDER PLATE GIRDERS WHEN SUBJECTED TO IN-PLANE PATCH LOADING

A method is presented for calculating the failure load of a plate girder when subjected to an in-plane patch load. The plastic failure mechanism is analysed to predict the collapse load when subjected to loading in the plane of the web. This type of loading is encountered in wheel loads on girders, and during the launching of large plate and box girder bridges. Results of the analysis agree with experimental data from various sources. /TRRL/
