This congress aims at formulating a well founded viewpoint on justified consumption of energy for lighting in interiors and for road traffic. Lighting consumes only 4% of all primary energy; nevertheless this energy should be reduced to the amount required for convenient quality and quantity of lighting. Lighting levels as nowadays recommended in usual codes are of the right order of magnitude. Measures for economizing energy consumption can primarily be found in: the application of high efficacy light sources and luminaires as these have recently become available, appropriate integration of facilities for lighting and air conditioning in interiors, accurate design of lighting installations, regular maintenance and cleaning of installations, convenient balance of local and general lighting in interiors and care for high reflection factors of walls and ceilings in interiors and of road surfaces.(a) /TRRL/
