HYDRAULIC ROCK DRILLS USED IN SCOTTISH PROJECT

The article describes the use of atlas copco hydraulic rock drills in driving the 3 M Horseshoe profile Megget tunnel in Scotland. In view of the hard abrasive sandstone encountered, hydraulic drilling equipment was chosen for greater productivity and economy compared with pneumatic equipment. The equipment chosen included two Atlas Copco rail-mounted Promec twin-boom jumbos, each fitted with two COP1038HD hydraulic rotary percussive rock drills. The twin-boom jumbos were mounted on a raildrill H260 associated with pneumatic drills eliminates the water and oil fog giving better working conditions, as well as more accurate positioning and alignment of the drill holes. /TRRL/
