A STUDY ON THE PERFORMANCE OF SOME WBM OVERLAYS USING BEAM DEFLECTION

An attempt has been made in this paper to evaluate different thicknesses of water bound macadam (wbm) overlays by visual as well as by deflection measurements. Deflection data obtained over a period of five years, was analysed statistically for a quantitative evaluation of each section and this relative ranking of the different sections based on deflection value correlates well with that based on visual observation. Based on the data collected, the permissible deflection for heavy traffic such as the one in this paper has been stipulated. Noting the transition point on the curve relating deflection per unit thickness of the overlay to overlay thickness it is shown that adequate thickness of the overlay as well as the pavement deflection corresponding to this overlay thickness can be obtained. A method for a quick assessment of overlay thickness is also given by adopting a procedure similar to Ruiz's. /TRRL/
