CONCRETE ROAD CONSTRUCTION

The publication - a guide to concrete road construction (third edition), is summarized together with points from discussions at the recent meeting of Nottingham University held to introduce the guide. Important properties of subgrades and sub-bases discussed were the type of material and type of support used for slabs. The design of transitions between concrete and flexible pavements were examined. Worked examples were given of separation layer design and reinforcement. The design of hard shoulders was discussed. Factors influencing the frequency and design of joints were discussed together with practical difficulties experienced in wet-forming. Quality control techniques were examined. There was some criticism of the indirect tensile test, but it was considered that rapid analysis methods were not yet ready to be introduced into specifications. Examples were given of the various forms of plant used in paving and finishing. The importance of good supervision was emphasised. Factors affecting the surface characteristics and methods of maintenance and repair are also discussed. /TRRL/
