APPLICATION AND DESIGN OF EXITS

TOEPASSING EN VORMGEVING VAN UITRITTEN

The point at which a residential street joins a road of higher classification is increasingly being designed to appear simply as an exit. In this way the designer attempts to give the street a more secluded character. By the very shape of the exit the impression will be given to through traffic that the street behind the exit is of less importance and that other roads might be preferable to reach the destination. In some cases the exit configuration serves to create a priority situation without using road signs. The article deals with the consequences related to the priority, the design of the construction and the legal aspects. As far as the latter is concerned, it is remarkable that since 1962 Dutch high court sentences have not contributed to a uniform interpretation by designers and lawyers. /TRRL/
