FIBERS EVERY WHICH WAY BOLSTER SMC

With a 160,000,000-lb market in the automotive industry alone, sheet molding compound (SMC) has come a long way since its introduction in the late '60s. In the next few years, however, this versatile material is expected to nearly double its dramatic performance of the past decade with cars and trucks accounting for some 300,000,000 lb by 1982. Greater use is also anticipated in nonautomotive applications. This article describes new developments in sheet molding compounds. Higher fiber content and special fiber orientation enhance the performance of sheet molding compounds broadening their appeal for structural applications.
