Because of the demands on car performance, testing has become an increasingly important phase of the design process. A survey is presented of some of the test procedures used by auto engineers to meet mandatory standards for noise, emissions, brakes, steering and bumpers, and also to optimize the use of materials and fuel consumption. Typical of the new era of testing is equipment and activity at Cadillac's test and development division which spans testing both on the proving grounds and in the laboratory. Multiple iterations and modal analysis are included among the testing procedures at Cadillac.
