MATERIALS PACE INNOVATIONS ON '79 CARS

Weight reduction, corrosion resistance cost savings and styling changes are the key influences behind the many changes in materials applications for the '79 cars. Weight is still the no. 1 problem and downsizing is still the principal cure. Principal uses of a number of key automobile materials are highlighted, including aluminum sheet and castings, coated and HSLA (high-strength low-alloy) steels, RIM (reaction injection molding) urethanes and other plastics.
